While New York still remains king for all things pizza, San Diego, and specifically North Park, has a plethora of great options if you’re hankering for a slice. This list is not complete and does not factor in sit-down restaurants or places that don’t serve slices to go.
Sicilian Thing
Located on 30th street in a no-frills building, Sicilian Thing is a quintessential pizza shop. Most of the inside is kitchen space and a typical glass counter filled with various slices. There is some seating for those who don’t want to eat to-go, but to me the beauty of grabbing a slice is eating it on the run.
One of the things that makes Sicilian Thing great is not just the diverse option of different slices, but the fact that there are both thin and thick options as well. I opted to try both and was thrilled to find that they tasted amazing.
The thick slice was soft and pillowy, with just the right ratio of toppings, cheese, and sauce. The thin slice was just as it should be – slightly chewy with an incredible sauce. Some like their pizza burnt and crispy, however, that is not always my preference.
The slices at Sicilian thing are just like those served on the East Coast where pizza as we know it was popularized.
Pizzeria Luigi
Originally started in Golden Hill, Pizzeria Luigi is well known throughout San Diego for having some of the best pies around. Their menu is extensive and features a fun and diverse range of options for everyone.
From caramelized onions to potatoes, there are tons of reasons to keep going back to Luigi’s. Their pizza is thin crust with a charred bottom and doesn’t leave you feeling greasy at all. While other places may be a little bit more soft and chewy, the slices here tend to be a little more on the crispy side.
Their sauces and cheeses are solid, as are the rest of their ingredients, making this the perfect place to sample lots of different flavors. My favorite is the Sports Bar, but you can’t go wrong here if you’re looking for some of the best pizza in North Park!
Gnarly Girl
A newcomer to the North Park pizza scene, Gnarly Girl pizza opened late May on El Cajon Boulevard. Their location is right across the street from Luigi’s, making the pizza scene in North Park even more interesting.
More of an East Coast style, the slice I had was during their soft opening, and was absolutely delicious. Soft dough with a killer sauce made this slice super solid. While slightly more greasy than some of the other pizza joints around town, this to me is absolutely not a negative.
I had a slice with pepperoni, jalapeno, and bacon, which is one of my favorite combinations. Everything worked well, and I am excited to see what else they come up with after their grand opening!
The Friendly
Well known for their Dirty Flat top Burgers, the Friendly is more than just your neighborhood burger joint. They also feature great slices with a variety of different topping combinations. On brand with their affordable burgers, slices are only $3.50.
Thin and crispy, they stick to the basics and hit it out of the park here. Everything at the Friendly is cooked with flavor and enjoyment in mind, and their slices are no exception. Greasy and delicious, they serve pizza the way it was meant to be.
The vibe here is fun as well. Good music is always playing and the staff is friendly and can often be seen shotgunning beers with customers. If you’re looking for pizza in North Park, San Diego, make sure to stop at the Friendly!
