Nothing beats the comfort and convenience of a great sandwich. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, a good sandwich is filling, re-heats well, and of course, is delicious. For the purpose of this list, I will also include subs, but not burgers. Don’t even get me started on the age-old argument if a hotdog is a sandwich (It’s not – feel free to argue with me in the comments below!).
Pete’s Seafood and Sandwich
If you’re looking for some of the best food in North Park, look no further than Pete’s. A locally owned neighborhood gem, Pete’s cooks up some of the best seafood sandwiches around.
The Shrimp Po Boy is my go-to, but the menu boasts favorites such as two different chicken parms – one featuring mozzarella sticks. What makes Pete’s stand out is their attention to detail. They take pride in billing themselves as having “some of the best flavors of New England with a sunny San Diego view”.
In order to achieve this, ingredients like fish and even flour are flown out from the East coast so that everything stays authentic and delicious.
Grab a bite a Pete’s and take it to Bird Park down the street for one of the best picnic spots in San Diego! Read more about Pete’s Seafood and Sandwich in my interview with Peter, the owner, here.
Fatboy Deli
While you can always make a sandwich at home, it never tastes quite as good as what you get from a deli. The ingredients may be similar, but it always feels like something is missing.
Fatboy Deli, off University Ave, is the go-to spot for a deli sandwich in North Park. Their menu has staples of every deli, including Hot Italian, Reuben, and Egg Salad sandwiches, but they offer unique twists as well.
Whether it’s the “Hot Poppa” with turkey, cream cheese, and hot Cheetos, or the “Fat Bastard” sporting half a pound of deli meat, there’s something on the menu for everyone. Hot or cold, basic or complex, they do it all and do it well.
In addition to having quality meats, veggies, and bread, Fatboy offers an extensive collection of chips and drinks. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages line the walls, making this a perfect one-stop shop for anyone looking to grab and go.
Sicilian Thing
Better known for their pizza, Sicilian Thing also serves up great subs to boot. If you’re looking for inexpensive food in North Park, a Chicken Parm from Sicilian Thing should be your next stop.
Both their subs and slices have an amazing tomato sauce that ties everything together. Packed with crispy chicken, smothered with sauce, and topped with a ton of cheese, this sandwich is a hearty, delicious meal.
I will admit that I was skeptical if one sandwich would be enough for a full lunch, but by the end, I was wholly satisfied and comfortably full. All of these factors make Sicilian Thing one of the best places to grab a bite in North Park for under $15!
Mama’s Bakery
If you’re looking for something a little bit lighter than a typical sandwich or sub, then Mama’s Bakery and Deli is the place for you. Cooking up Mediterranean wraps and plates, the meals here are fresh, healthy, and delicious.
There is a huge selection of wraps here, from Baba Ghanouj to Beef Shwarma. If you need vegetarian food in North Park, Mama’s is a great option. The wraps here include lots of fresh veggies and mouthwatering sauces.
While some of the sandwiches on this list will be enough for a meal and then some, the ones at Mama’s are a little bit smaller. However, for a snack or light meal to eat on the go, this is a perfect option.
